The following software products will be end of life in 2020, obviously the software will continue to work exactly as it always has so there is no need to worry that suddenly it won’t work anymore. However from this date Microsoft will no longer create patches, fixes, updates or any other development.
In the short term this will this will have no real effect on how you use the software assuming you use it in the way it was developed. In the long term the software will become more vulnerable to external influences ie virus attacks and creators of new programs may not support their software integration with older versions of Windows and Office packages.
Below is a list of Windows and Office Versions affected by this date:
Server Operating Systems - January 14th
Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2
Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1
Windows Server SBS 2008
Inbuilt into SBS 2008 (Exchange 2007, support end date was April 11, 2017)
Desktop Operating Systems - January 14th
Windows 7 (Service Pack 1) – All Versions
Desktop Software – October 13th
Microsoft Office 2010 (Service Pack 2) – All Versions
What to Do?
If you have a server operating system that is listed above then you need to start planning, do you need new hardware or will your current hardware support a newer compatible Server operating system?
If you are using Windows 7 then a Windows 10 upgrade is your only real choice, but you will need to ensure your system hardware and your currently installed applications are compatible with Windows 10. An in place upgrade will in most instances be a simple process, keeping all your data and applications exactly as they are just installing the new operating system to take Windows 7's place.
